The Best Hotel in Amsterdam – Sofitel Amsterdam

We have stayed in some pretty fabulous hotels over the past year, from the amazing Waldorf Astoria in Dubai to the beautiful One & Only Cape Town, but the room we had at the Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam makes me think that it may be the best hotel in Amsterdam.

Why is it the Best Hotel in Amsterdam?

There are many factors I use when rating a hotel: its location, amenities, service, food, etc.. This will be a comprehensive review of all factors to determine if the Sofitel is the best hotel in Amsterdam.

Sofitel Amsterdam Location

The Best Hotel in Amsterdam
The Sofitel Legend The Grand is located right in the heart of Amsterdam

I was surprised how compact the city of Amsterdam is. It is easy to walk or bike to anywhere in the city. The Sofitel Amsterdam is located right in the center on the edges of the infamous Red Light District. The central location meant only a 30-minute walk to even the furthest part of the city we visited! Also being so close to the center of the city you find a lot of great restaurants and bars nearby, not to mention the coffee shops if you’re into that.😉 Based on its location the Sofitel Amsterdam scores 10/10.

Sofitel Amsterdam Amenities

The massive living room of our suite

Thanks to Citi Prestige’s 4th-night free program and a Club Accor promotion we were able to snag a spectacular two bedroom Imperial Suite at the Sofitel Amsterdam for a pretty reasonable rate. This 1076 square foot room was crazy. We had a butler to take care of our laundry, and we were brought snacks every afternoon. Our favorite part of the room was the amazing Sofitel MyBed. The bed was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept on in a hotel. As most Sofitel locations do, the Sofitel Legend in Amsterdam had Hermes toiletries that Marc fell in love with – Lucky for us the Sofitel Munich had them as well!

The “gym” in the Sofitel Amsterdam was pretty pathetic, but that was ok since we walked nearly 8 miles each day. In the spa, there was also a beautiful indoor pool, sauna, and steam room.

The indoor pool was lovely at the Sofitel Legend the Grand in Amsterdam, just a little cold!

The only beef I had about the spa was the pool was a touch chilly! The amenities that the Sofitel Amsterdam offered are what you’d expect the best hotel in Amsterdam to have. Based on the room, spa and service I rate the Sofitel Amsterdam 8/10.

Sofitel Amsterdam Food & Drinks

The Sofitel Amsterdam has two restaurants and 5 bars on its relatively small property. The flagship restaurant is Bridges, which is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and has been awarded 1 Michelin star in the 2017 Amsterdam Michelin Guide making it one of only twenty-two restaurants to be awarded at least one star in Amsterdam. We ate breakfast at Bridges our final day, and it definitely lives up to the hype. I ordered two breakfasts and finished it all!

Two of the bars are located in Bridges, but our favorite Sofitel Amsterdam bar was The Flying Dutchman. The Dutchman has only about 10-12 seats at its bar making it cozy, but we met two couples who were also visiting from the states when we checked it out our second night at the hotel.

The food was very good, and the bartender at the Flying Dutchman was knowledgeable and attentive. After trying quite a bit of the food and drinks, I give the Sofitel Legend the Grand an 8/10. This probably could have been a touch higher if the room service menu was better and if the bloody mary at brunch had more flavor. Nonetheless, Sofitel Amsterdam still has potential to be the best hotel in Amsterdam!

Conclusion: Is the Sofitel the best Hotel in Amsterdam?

It seems that Amsterdam is a city that features more boutique hotels than the larger players in the industry. This combined with the very limited footprint and space available there isn’t a whole lot of space for huge hotels. TimeOut Amsterdam rates the Sofitel in the top 5 luxury hotels in the city, and the only one that isn’t 4/4 $$$$. Looking at the three categories the Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam scored an impressive 26/30, and while this was my first time visiting Amsterdam, and thus the only hotel in Amsterdam I have stayed in I believe the Sofitel is the best hotel in Amsterdam.

Based of the Amenities, Service, Location and Food & Drinks that the Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam is the best luxury hotel in Amsterdam. | Passports to Life
